Paul Faris
The Battle for the Child
Canadian parents are in a battle for the souls of their children. We at HSLDA invite you to join us on the front lines of this battle as we seek to protect the right of Canadian parents to direct the upbringing of their children. Sometimes the only thing standing between us and the future indoctrination of our children as foreseen in Brave New World are a few good men and women who simply refuse to surrender the minds of their children. In this seminar Paul offers insight into where the battle lines are being drawn and what we can expect in the next several years.

Presentation of New 2009 Home Education Study
The newest research on home educated adults in Canada has just been released. This study is giving us insight into some of the questions we have never before been able to answer; questions like, do home educated students keep their faith, do they participate in community activities, and many more. Join Paul Faris as he guides us through this exciting new research.

Home Education in Canada
This session offers an update on the legal issues of concern to home-schoolers in Alberta and across the country.

Why would anyone home educate through high school and how in the world would they do it?
These are the questions going through most people’s minds as they contemplate the challenge of homeschooling through high-school. As a home-school graduate who was home-schooled through high school, Paul discusses the various facets of this question. From socialization and sports, to advanced math and post-secondary admissions, this session will involve the many questions being asked on this subject as well as some encouragement for those contemplating the challenge of homeschooling teenagers.

Therese McDonald

Mediated Learning is for everyone! ( Part 1)
Therese will offer first a general understanding of Mediated Learning, citing the “core” of the mediational experience. Those attending this session will come away with a foundational grasp of how to implement ML as it pertains to behavior, relationships, and academics. The presentation will be interactive and practical. Filmed scenarios showing Mediated Learning in action will be viewed and discussed. What is the difference between passive learning and active learning? Come prepared to learn more about process vs. outcome. How do I bring my child to a place of success? What are the building blocks to thinking?
Mediated Learning is for everyone! ( Part 2 )
Therese will look at common areas of challenge, giving a revealing look at what affects learning, and strategies that improve thinking and behavior. Learn about process questions, “asking, not telling”, and ways to help your child grow cognitively. Therese will take participants through the phases of the mental act (thinking) and show them how Mediated Learning is a means to work beyond barriers. -More scenarios to view and effective practices to take home. Reading problems? Verbal difficulties? Gifted learner challenges? Trouble retaining information? Self-control issues? No need to stay stuck, change is possible.
